Fairmount Water Works
Handymakes collaborated with Habithèque Inc. to develop a number of experiences for Philadelphia's Fairmount Water Works, the nation's oldest water treatment facility, and the unbreakable connection between people and the rivers on which we rely. These exhibits help visitors grasp a critical message: "We live better when the river lives."

Dispatches from the River
This interactive multimedia experience introduces Water Works visitors to Philadelphia's Schuylkill River, and key elements of the river's ecology that reveal its health. The Handymakes team researched and developed all content for the program, sourced and procured the images, video and audio, designed the storyboards, and art directed the program design. Project collaborator Joël Bellucci at PixelPresto performed all of the digital design, programming, motion graphics, final coding, and equipment setup. |
River Postcards
With this interactive media station, visitors can send friends and family a "postcard from the river" that encourages respect and care for our precious water resources. Each postcard can be customized with an evocative image, poetic message, and fun stamp. The Handymakes team worked with Habithèque to develop the concept, design the storyboards, and write a set of messages with a positive environmental focus. Handymakes also managed the final program design with developer HD Interactive, as well as the equipment specification, purchasing, and setup. |

River Characters @ The Mussel Hatchery
Handymakes performed extensive research, wrote the content, and sourced all images and video for 28 River Characters—plants and animals that form the amazing ecological community of the Schuylkill. This content became an interactive media station that accompanies etched glass imagery of the characters by artist Stacy Levy. From tiny diatoms to giant sturgeon, Handymakes made each character come alive for the Water Works audience. Our work was so thorough and approachable that it also became the core content for a project outside of the original brief—the Mussel Hatchery's interactive website, The Mighty Mussel.
